Where trailer frames crack
Check these spots before every season and after any hard hit.
- The tongue where it joins the main frame
- Crossmember welds and spring hanger brackets
- Bunk and roller brackets on boat trailers
- Rusted or corroded sections near axles
What welding can fix
Cracked welds, broken brackets and localized damage can usually be repaired by cleaning to bare metal, stopping the crack and welding with the right process for steel or aluminum. Reinforcement can be added where the original design allows.
When to replace instead
Severely rusted or thin metal, bent main rails, and damage near the coupler often call for replacing the part. A weld repair should never be used to raise a trailer's rated capacity.
Preparing for a mobile repair
Unload the trailer if possible, park it on firm level ground, and send photos of the crack and the frame around it. Note whether the trailer is steel or aluminum.
Common questions
- Can you weld an aluminum trailer?
- Yes, aluminum trailer frames and brackets can be TIG or MIG welded. Aluminum needs different preparation than steel, so let us know the material.
- Can you repair my trailer at my house?
- Mobile repair is often possible when there is safe, level access. Share the address and photos so access can be confirmed.
- Is it safe to tow with a cracked frame?
- Cracks can grow quickly under load. Avoid towing until the damage has been inspected.
