Common gate problems
Identify the failure before deciding on a fix.
- Sagging or dragging gate: worn hinges, a leaning post or a weak frame
- Broken hinge or latch welds
- Rust at the bottom rail and joints
- Bent bars from vehicle or wind damage
What a welding repair involves
Repairs usually include replacing or re-welding hinges, adding a diagonal brace to stop sag, straightening or replacing bent sections and grinding out rusted welds before re-welding.
Repair or replace?
If the frame is sound, repair is usually the practical option. Widespread rust through the frame or a badly bent gate may make a new custom-fabricated gate the better choice.
What to send with your request
Photos of the whole gate, the hinges and posts, plus the opening width and the gate's material. Mention if the gate has an automatic opener.
Common questions
- Can you fix my gate on site?
- Most gate repairs are done on site with mobile welding equipment, as long as there is access to the gate and space to work.
- Can you build a new custom gate?
- Yes, custom gates and railings can be fabricated. Send measurements and a photo or sketch of the style you want.
- Do you work on gates with automatic openers?
- Welding repairs to the gate frame and hinges are possible. Opener electronics may need to be handled by the opener's installer.
